Do you feel in your heart of hearts you’re going to quit on your New Year’s Resolutions pretty soon after you make them?
Nooo!…. You’ll get there. You just need to make them meaningful to you!
One way to get motivated is to become aware of how your goal impacts important areas of your life. If it doesn't make a positive difference you can look for ways to change that. List the things that are most important to you and find the connection between them and your goals. Here’s an example using Action for Happiness’ 10 Keys to happier living (read ‘life areas to work on to have a happier life’).
Working example. Running a half marathon.
Giving My family will benefit from me being less stressed out when I run. I could make this benefit more people by running for a charity.
Connecting - I can run with others and make new friends. I can be more present with my loved ones after my run has cleared my head.
Keeping healthy) - Running will improve my heart health and energy levels.
Appreciating - I can use some of my running time to observe and appreciate what is around me. I feel more appreciative when I am feeling good after my run.
Trying out (learning) - Running this distance is new to me. I can learn more about running and how to overcome physical and motivational setbacks and barriers.
Direction - I will have a measurable goal to work on that progresses me on my health journey.
Resilience - I can learn more about how I behave when I don’t feel like running and how to overcome that. I will get more resilient as I get used to regular training.
Positive Emotion - I’ll get a buzz when I meet my targets along the way. I’ll enjoy bonding with my running partners and experiencing the atmosphere on race day.
Self Acceptance - I can practice cheering myself on and being kind to myself when I don’t do as well as I’d like.
Spirituality / Meaning - I will feel like I am part of something bigger on race day. I can be of better service to the world when I am happy and healthy.
Keep a reminder of your answers close at hand and look at it anytime you don’t feel like taking action on your goals.
